Newcastle United could have the ideal midfield signing play into their hands amidst reports that a player the Magpies have been attributed with interest in will be allowed to leave on a free transfer.

German outlet Bild report that Hamburg have no intention to renew the contract of former Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham man Lewis Holtby, leaving Newcastle free to discuss a pre-contractual agreement in the New Year.

Back in the summer, The Daily Mirror claimed Newcastle were seeking a deal worth £5m and the Magpies would now be able to get the German for a fraction of that price, with Hamburg potentially allowing him to leave in January as they cut their losses.

The 27-year-old was once rated very highly but has struggled to live up to those expectations, scoring just one goal in 25 league appearances during his time at White Hart Lane, then scoring once in 13 showings on-loan with Fulham.

Capped by Germany three times, Holtby would bring experience to Newcastle’s midfield and may be worth a punt.
