Newcastle United may have to give up their quest to sign an experienced striker, with reports stating that his club are determined to retain his services despite a lack of consistent first-team opportunities.

The Daily MailĀ states that Liverpool will not allow Daniel Sturridge to leave on-loan in January, despite the England internationals lack of football this season and his personal aspirations to push his way into Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the World Cup.

Newcastle are amongst the squad being widely linked with the services of the former Chelsea and Manchester City striker but Jurgen Klopp sees him as an important member of the squad and the cover for Roberto Firmino.

Liverpool are willing to let Danny Ings leave on-loan in the New Year, which is why the services of Sturridge will be retained as Klopp is desperate to ensure his attacking options are not left too slim if Ings does depart.

Newcastle do fortunately have other options to pursue in the New Year as they seek to improve their own attacking ranks, including Ings himself.
