Newcastle United are facing a stern challenge ahead of them as they seek to push away from the relegation zone in the Premier League, after a period of eight defeats in their last nine matches.

The Magpies desperately need to get points on the board and face a crucial test with fellow strugglers West Ham this weekend, as the Premier League reaches the halfway point in the season, but uncertainty still floods St. James’ Park.

Takeover talks continue to rumble on and there is still concern that Rafael Benitez could leave in frustration, whilst the poor run of form also brings worries that the Spaniard’s tenure may not be as stable as once thought.

Remarkably, Italian outlet Tutto Mercato Web states the Magpies have identified Reading boss Jaap Stam as the ideal replacement for Benitez if he does leave the club- though it’s clear a lot needs to be sorted before the managerial position is even brought into the picture.

Benitez remains extremely popular on Tyneside and many believe he is the key for securing safety, as the Magpies look to avoid an immediate return back to the Championship.
