Newcastle United are looking to bolster their firepower in next month’s transfer window and have set their sights on a Champions League striker- and it’s Besiktas’ Cenk Tosun.

The Sun states the Magpies are expressing an interest in Red Bull Salzburg striker Dimitri Oberlin, who has impressed so far this season on-loan with Swiss side FC Basel.

20-year-old Oberlin impressed against Manchester United in this season’s group stage, reportedly also being tracked by scouts from the Red Devils, but Newcastle are in prime position to sign the young forward.

However, Newcastle will need to offload Serbian striker Aleksandar Mitrovic if they are to fund a January move for Oberlin but they will be encouraged by the fact that a number of potential suitors have emerged in the hunt for the 23-year-old’s signature.

Mitrovic seems certain to leave in the New Year as he seeks an increase in playing time ahead of next summer’s World Cup, having fallen behind Joselu and Dwight Gayle in the pecking order on Tyneside.
