Newcastle United are hoping to lure Atletico Madrid striker Kevin Gameiro to the Premier League this January, reports TalkSPORT.

Rafael Benitez is thought to be looking to bolster his attacking options after the New Year, and with a takeover of the club now looking set to be completed before Christmas, the Spaniard could have money to spend.

His current strike-force of Dwight Gayle, Alexandar Mitrovic and Joselu have managed eight goals in all competitions between them this season.

Gameiro has half that many goals for Atletico this season in only a handful of games after finding first team football difficult to come by.

The Frenchman is fourth choice striker in Madrid, behind Antoine Griezmann, Angel Correa and the incoming Diego Costa, meaning he has made only five starts in La Liga since August.

With the World Cup next summer, Gameiro is thought to be open to a move away from Atletico in order to boost his chances of inclusion in France’s squad.

Should the Magpies wish to purchase the striker however, they are likely to have to pay in excess of £20 million, with the Atletico keen to recoup most of the £28 million spent on him in the summer of 2016.
