Former Newcastle United and England midfielder Kieran Dyer has said the Magpies must upgrade on struggling striker Dwight Gayle this January if they are to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

Gayle was the club’s top scorer last season as he banged in 23 goals to help fire Newcastle to the Championship title and back to England’s top flight, however he has since struggled to replicate that kind of form in the Premier League.

The former Crystal Palace striker has hit the net only three times in 15 appearances, and now former Toon Dyer believes it is time manager Rafael Benitez looked elsewhere for his main source of goals.

I think they need a goalscorer – someone who is proven in the Premier League or in a top league to score 20 goals a season,” he told The Chronicle.

“Dwight Gayle has probably been the shining light and he scored goals in the Championship but when he’s been in the Premier League before he hasn’t really set the world alight.

“The centre forward is the one area.”

Fellow strikers Alexandar Mitrovic and Joselu have also managed only two and three goals each this season  respectively.
