Newcastle United are set for a crucial period ahead in the January transfer window and some intriguing reports have surfaced, which suggest a move for a Championship hotshot could materialise.
Fulham ace Tom Cairney has been linked with a move to Tyneside consistently over the past year, with interest first surfacing last January and then continuing into the post season period- but the Magpies were unable to conclude a deal.
The Scotland international excelled last season with eleven goals and 13 assists, providing the cutting edge that Newcastle have lacked since their return to the Premier League. Whilst 26-year-old Cairney admits he’s flattered by the interest, a move is unlikely to go ahead.
Quoted by The Evening Standard, Cairney spoke of his delight in attracting Rafael Benitez’s interest but stated he’s happy in West London.
“It’s a massive accolade that Rafa Benitez wants me. It’s a pat on the back to myself I guess, to know that other managers appreciate what I’m doing.”
“You can’t put a price on happiness. Last season I was extremely happy on and off the pitch and that’s when you play your best football. I wanted to show my happiness to the fans, let them know that I want to be here and try to take Fulham forward.”
“I love playing football here. That’s what I want to do. I feel a responsibility to Fulham. It’s been great ever since I arrived. I enjoy playing football, I really enjoy playing it at the Cottage and long may it continue.”
With Fulham hovering in mid-table and looking unlikely to push towards a return to the Premier League, Cairney could be tempted by an offer from Newcastle but the Cottagers will command a high price.
