The vice president of Turkish side Besiktas has dashed Newcastle United’s hopes of signing striker Cenk Tosun after slapping an astronomical price-tag on his head.

Newcastle have been heavily linked with a move for the Turkey international after the New Year, and were expecting to have to pay somewhere in the region of £20 million should they wish to secure his services.

However, such hopes have since been flattened with the revelation that Besiktas value their star striker at as much as £100 million.

Vice-president Deniz Atala, speaking on a potential move away this January for Tosun is reported to have said: “If you ask me Cenk is worth €100 million, he has a very bright future. He is starting to reap the fruits from the seeds we sowed.”

£100 million would make Tosun the second most expensive player in history, only behind PSG’s Neymar who joined the Ligue 1 side from Barcelona during the summer for a fee of around £200 million.
