Aston Villa are the latest in a long line of clubs to be linked with a January move for Newcastle midfielder Mohamed Diame, reports the Chronicle.

The Senegal international was a pivotal figure in the Magpies promotion winning last campaign, however has struggled for first team football this season under Rafael Benitez, making only 1 Premier League start and registering just over 120 minutes of action in all competition.

After the club signed Mikel Merino from Borussia Dortmund in the summer, Diame now finds himself surplus to requirements and could be allowed to leave the club for the right price after the New Year.

Cardiff City, as well as his former club Hull City, have both already been linked with a move for the 30-year-old, and now so Aston Villa, with Steve Bruce understood to be keen on a reunion with his former star.

The duo worked together at Hull City and helped the Tigers earn promotion to the Premier League via winning the play-offs in 2015/16 prior to his move to Tyneside.
