Newcastle have joined Arsenal in pursuing Atlanta United playmaker Miguel Almiron, according to Calciomercato.com.

The number 10 has been an integral player for the American side during their inaugural season in the MLS. In their first campaign, Atlanta reached the playoffs, losing out in a qualification decider to Columbus Crew on Friday.

Almiron was signed for a club record $8m from Argentinian club Lanus back in January and he has proven a wise purchase with nine goals and eight assists in 30 league appearances this season.

The Paraguayan international was linked with Arsenal earlier this month, but the latest information suggests that the Magpies may attempt to sign the player in the January transfer window.

The Chronicle reports that manager Rafa Benitez is actively seeking a creative midfielder (along with a striker and left back), and Almiron would certainly fit the bill if they are looking to sign a young player (he is 23) at a reasonable price.
