Newcastle may “rekindle their interest” in former Tottenham midfielder Lewis Holtby, according to HITC.

Reports from ESPN back in June suggested that the Magpies and Bournemouth were monitoring the 27 year old’s situation at his current side Hamburg, with the midfielder’s contract close to expiring.

Holtby however remained at the Bundesliga club when the August transfer window closed, and began the season as part of the club’s first team. The German international was however benched for the 2-1 defeat against Hertha Berlin at the end of last month, and he was left out of the squad altogether for their last league game against Stuttgart on Saturday.

This has led to HITC speculating that Newcastle may look at Holtby again in January. The German can play in the number 10 role; a position the Chronicle believe that manager Rafa Benitez is looking to recruit for when the transfer window reopens.

The fact he would be available cheaply due to his contract situation may come in to the Spaniard’s thinking as well, although his numbers this season for Hamburg aren’t that impressive.

The midfielder has generally played out wide this campaign, but he has managed just one goal and no assists in eight games this campaign.
