Rivals Sunderland are plotting a surprise bid for Newcastle United youngster Alex Gilliead, reports HITC.

Gilliead, a promising product of the Newcastle academy, has yet to make his first team debut but has spent the last 3-and-a-bit seasons out on loan with Carlisle, Luton and Bradford City respectively.

Sunderland, who are desperate to avoid a second consecutive relegation after a less than poor start to life in the Championship, are said to be eyeing Gilliead in an attempt to helps secure their status in England’s second division.

The Black Cats are thought to want to Englishman on loan until the end of the season.

The young winger scooped the Player of the Month award for Bradford in September and has continued to impress for the Bantams, attracting attention from a number of clubs, with Hull City and Millwall both too interested in the Magpies youngster.
