Dwight Gayle says he is determined to prove his worth at St James Park despite falling out of favour with manager Rafael Benitez this season.

Gayle was the club’s top scorer last season as the Magpies won the Championship and earn promotion back to the Premier League, hitting 23 goals all in the league.

However, after the club signed Joselu from Stoke City in the summer for a fee of around £5 million, Gayle has found himself playing second fiddle to the Spaniard.

Despite his lack of game time – he has started only 3 games all season – Gayle is determined to push his way back into the side.

“I just need to keep working hard and prove to the gaffer that I can be in the starting 11.” said the Englishman.

“We had a bad result before the international break so it’s given us chance to work on a few things we needed to and then hopefully we carry that into the game at the weekend.

“When you don’t get the result or performance you want you prefer to get back out there as soon as you can and get it out of your system. But that will mean we’re all raring to go at the weekend.”
