Newcastle United have made contact with Manchester United over the January transfer of Luke Shaw, reports Football Insider.

Magpies boss Rafael Benitez is understood to be keen on adding the former Southampton str to his squad after the new year in the absence of the injured Paul Dummett, and would be keen to take Shaw on-loan.

The Spaniard is now thought to have enquired about a potential deal for the Englishman ahead of the transfer window as he looks ahead to the second half of the season.

Despite Newcastle’s approach however, United are thought to want to let go of Shaw on a permanent basis, and will be looking for around £20 million for his signature.

With Newcastle’s impending takeover now up in the air however, the Magpies would struggle to afford such a fee, hence their desire for a loan move.

Shaw has had an injury prone spell at Old Trafford, making only 49 appearances in 3-and-a-half seasons with the Red Devils.
