Newcastle are set to make a shock January move for Barcelona keeperĀ Jasper Cillessen, according to reports from Spain.

Manager Rafael Benitez is keen to add a new number one this winter having let go of Tim Krul to Brighton during the summer and currently having Rob Elliott as the club’s only experienced shot-stopper.

The Spaniard tried to keen a new keeper during the summer, however was unable to do so through budgetary constraints. However, with the club set to receive TV rights money from the Premier League and the impending takeover on the horizon, such worries are unlikely to prevent any transfer activity after the New Year.

Cillessen, who moved to the Camp Nou last summer from Ajax, however has made only 1 start for his new club in La Liga since the move, playing second fiddle to Barca’s first choice keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

The Dutch keeper is still his country’s number one choice between the sticks, but is thought to be on the search for more regular first team football after a frustrating year in Spain.
