Newcastle United are desperate to improve their form after tumbling down the standings on the back of four consecutive Premier League defeats, leaving the Magpies looking over their shoulder towards the relegation zone.

The work following a fine start to the season now appears to be undone and Saturday’s 3-0 defeat to Watford at St. James’ Park is a huge blow ahead of a difficult run of fixtures for Rafael Benitez’s side.

The Magpies have to face the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City before the end of the year, as well as facing crucial clashes against fellow strugglers West Brom, Leicester, West Ham and Everton in the coming weeks.

Newcastle have struggled for consistency in front of goal and are widely being linked with interest in Besiktas’ in-form striker Cenk Tosun, with fresh reports stating the Magpies are ready to offer a player in makeweight for a deal.

Turkish outlet DHA states Newcastle will offer out-of-favour Serbian striker Aleksandar Mitrovic in return for Tosun, along with a fee of £9m.

The 23-year-old has struggled for opportunities this season and dropped a fresh hint last week to suggest he could eye an exit in January, so Newcastle could look to make this work in their favour as Mitrovic is desperate for first-team opportunities ahead of next summer’s World Cup.

However, a decision to sell Mitrovic is unlikely to go down well with supporters as many have expressed their desire to see him handed more opportunities.
