Newcastle United fans will be excitedly looking ahead to a potentially dramatic January transfer window, where the Magpies could find themselves with plenty of money to spend.

Takeover talks are widely reported to be coming to a successful close, with many outlets suggesting that Amanda Staveley’s consortium could take over from Mike Ashley as early as this week- but the overall aim is to conclude a deal before Christmas.

One rumour that refuses to go away suggests that Newcastle United want to bring former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Lewis Holtby back to the Premier League, with the Magpies likely able to get the Hamburg man on a free transfer.

The latest reports, cited by SportWitness, don’t add further credibility to the rumours, as it seems to be the same reports regurgitated, but it continues to see Holtby’s name pushed into the faces of Newcastle fans.

Now 27, Holtby has found some stability back in Germany, making 69 Bundesliga appearances for Hamburg, but the three-cap German international continues to struggle to find consistency- suggesting he’s perhaps not the man Newcastle need.
