Newcastle United’s quest to improve their side as they battle for Premier League survival could be handed a massive boost, amidst reports of a bargain deal being available.

TalkSport report that the Magpies remain keen on Barcelona goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen, who’s failed to become a regular in Catalonia since joining from Ajax as he remains behind Marc-Andre Ter Stegen in the pecking order.

The Dutch international is reportedly on a long list of fringe players that the Spanish giants are looking to offload in order to reduce their wage bill, with Newcastle potentially able to get the experienced stopper for just £9m.

28-year-old Cillessen is a long-term target for the Magpies, who are keen to upgrade their options between the sticks with Irish international Rob Elliot currently first-choice.

Whilst the prime target in January will be to sign a top-class striker, the opportunity to land Cillessen for a bargain price may be too good for Rafael Benitez’s side to turn down.
