Newcastle United are preparing their plans for the January transfer window and beyond as they edge closer to a takeover, with Rafael Benitez working out the business he wants to complete.

After seeing summer signing Mikel Merino become a star in the Premier League, Newcastle are keen to bring in a compatriot to work alongside the former Borussia Dortmund star and have entered the running for a highly-rated talent.

According to The Sun, Newcastle are rivalling the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal to land Athletic Bilbao’s 21-year-old talent Gorka Guruzeta.

The youngsters is set to play against Manchester United’s U23 side this week and Newcastle are likely to be amongst a host of top sides in attendance, with plenty of clubs monitoring the situation of the versatile player, who’s available for a free transfer next summer.

As such, Athletic Bilbao may look to cash-in during the January transfer window to command a price for the player, who can play as a winger or as a striker, but the battle for his signature is likely to be fierce.

By offering the chance to earn regular playing opportunities though, something that Chelsea and Arsenal cannot offer, Newcastle could push themselves to the front of the queue.
