Newcastle United are on the hunt to improve their squad in January as they battle to mainstay their mid-table spot in the Premier League but one signing seems to be unlikely.

The agent of Hamburg man Lewis Holtby, Marcus Noack, is quoted by Bild as stating he believes the midfielder will remain with the German side until the end of the season- despite seeing his request to train with the U21 side refused.

“I am assuming that Lewis will fulfil his contract with Hamburg and there are no signs from the club that he should leave earlier, and I am sure that the club will need him over the course of the season to bring his qualities to bear.”

Holtby has struggled to find opportunities this season and seems likely to leave the German side in 2018, though a return to the Premier League, where he was formerly with Tottenham Hotspur, seems unlikely to take place in January.

It is perhaps a benefit for Newcastle though as Holtby has disappointed with his performances in recent years and it’s difficult to see how he would improve Rafael Benitez’s squad.
