Newcastle have been given a boost in their pursuit of former Tottenham Hotspur star Lewis Holtby after the midfielder was told in no uncertain terms he has no future at his current club Hamburg.

Holtby left Tottenham in 2015 for the Bundesliga outfit, however after two solid seasons with the German outfit he now finds himself surplus to requirements.

The 27-year-old star was left out of manager Markus Gisdol’s match-day squad at the weekend and instead was forced to watch the action from the stands.

Following his omission, the club’s sporting director Jens Todt told German paper Bild: “Of course that’s bitter for him. But the coach makes the decision on the likelihood of the team’s best outcome.”

Newcastle were linked with a move for the midfielder during the summer, however Holtby was keen to remain in his home country.

However, after the most recent turn of events, it is understood Holtby could be on his way out of the Volksparkstadion with a return to the Premier League on the cards.

Rafel Benitez is looking to strengthen his squad and add Premier League experience this January after a solid start to the new season, with Holtby believed to be on the Spaniard’s christmas wish list.
