Newcastle United have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Sporting Lisbon star Bas Dost who has insisted he will not be leaving the Portuguese club this January.

The Magpies were thought to have a €40 million bid for the Dutchman rejected during the summer, with Lisbon holding out for as much as €60 million for the striker.

Despite their huge asking price, Newcastle were expected to go in for Dost again during the January transfer period, alongside Everton who are also interested in the striker, however all hopes of a winter move for the striker have since gone with his latest statements.

“I’m not waiting for a winter transfer at all,” he said (via AD). “I’m excited at Sporting and I want to be a champion here. I’m not leaving in the winter break.”

Dost has scored an incredible 41 goals in 53 appearances for Sporting since joining them from Wolfsburg in the summer of 2016.
