Newcastle remain in the running to sign former Manchester City striker Stevan Jovetic after it was revealed manager Rafael Benitez still remains in contact with the Montenegro international, reports HITC.

The Magpies had tried to sign Jovetic during the summer from Inter Milan, however their £20 million offer was rebuffed with the striker instead joining AS Monaco as a replacement for the departed Kylian Mbappe.

The ex-City star however has failed to make an impact for the French champions, making only five appearances all season and scoring just one goal.

After his poor start to life in Ligue 1, Jovetic could find himself on the move again as soon as January, with Rafael Benitez certain the striker would be open to a move to Tyneside should the Magpies go in again for him.

Newcastle are expected to have money to spend this January, as a takeover of the club by Amanda Staveley and her firm PCP Capital Partners is thought to be happening before the New Year.
