Newcastle United are preparing a club record bid for Besiktas star Cenk Tosun this January, reports CNN Turk.

Tosun has attracted attention from a host of Premier League clubs including Tottenham and Everton following his impressive performances for both club and country over the past 18 months, however it is now Newcastle who lead the race for the striker’s signature.

The Magpies are understood to be ready to offer Besiktas £17.5 million (~€20 million) in an attempt to lure the Turkey striker away from the Super Lig and to St James Park.

The bid would exceed the club’s current transfer record which stands at the £16 million Newcastle paid for Real Madrid’s Michael Owen in 2005.

That record is the longest standing in Premier League history by over five years.

Tosun had an impressive season last year with Besitkas, finding the net 24 times in all competitions, form he has carried through to the new campaign having scored 8 times in 13 appearances.
