Newcastle United are considering a move for former Tottenham loanee Pau Lopez this January, reports Sports Witness.

Rafael Benitez is keen to add a new number one to his squad following the departure of Tim Krul to Brighton during the summer, and could turn to Lopez as the answer to his goalkeeping woes.

The Magpies were originally thought to be interested in PSV shot-stopper,Jeroen Zoet, with the Dutch club in-turn eyeing Lopez as his replacement.

However in a turn of fate, Newcastle will now bypass the middle man so-to-say and instead move for the Espanyol keeper himself.

The 22-year-old Spaniard, who was thought to be eyed as a long-term replacement for Hugo Lloris at White Hart Lane, spent last on-loan with Tottenham Hotspur, however failed to make an appearance for Mauricio Pochettino’s side and hence returned to La Liga.

Lopez could now be given a second chance at a career in English football with Newcastle, however it remains unclear whether the keeper would be keen on a return to the Premier League so soon.
