Newcastle have been shown to be coming up short when it comes to a key statistic this season when compared to a number of their mid-table rivals.

New data released has shown the total distance covered by each Premier League club on the pitch in the 11 top flight games this season, with Rafael Benitez’s side coming in at 12th position.

Now while 12th may not be a total disaster, what is worrying is that the Magpies are seen to be trailing a number of the clubs surrounding them in the table and those who they are likely to be competing with for a position in mid-table come the end of the campaign.

Sitting in 11th in the Premier League table, the four clubs directly above the Magpies in the league – Huddersfield, Watford, Brighton and Burnley – all also beat Newcastle in terms of distance covered.

While Rafael Benitez’s side have amounted a total of 1213km, Huddersfield have managed 1221km, Brighton 1225km, Burnley 1238km and Watford 1241km (the fourth highest in the league)

While the differences may seem little, it means that Newcastle are covering as much as 3km less per game than their closest rivals in the league, a statistic that could prove vital come to the end of the campaign.

Manchester United, who are second in league table, sit last in terms of distance covered, having ran a total of 1162km.
