Newcastle United suffered a 1-0 defeat to Bournemouth at the weekend, condemning the Magpies to back-to-back 1-0 defeats in the Premier League.

Rafael Benitez’s side have struggled for consistency in front of goal this season with summer signing Joselu leading the scoring charts with two goals, whilst Dwight Gayle is yet to break his duck this season and Aleksander Mitrovic has seen opportunities extremely limited.

The Magpies elected to play Joselu and Gayle as an attacking partnership this weekend and were unfortunate not to see it work out, as the latter incorrectly had a goal ruled out for offside, meaning that his goal drought continued.

Benitez revealed to The Northern Echo that he was encouraging Gayle to improve in training though and stated the former Crystal Palace forward will continue to get chances, as long as he improves behind the scenes.

“Competition is good, and we said to him (Gayle) that if he trains well, he will get chances. We will train now, we will have some sessions this week and wait for the players to come back from international duty. It’s still the same, we are improving but we need this time to improve some more.”

Newcastle will certainly need to improve after the international break as the Magpies face three away trips in their next four matches, including clashes against Manchester United and Chelsea.
