Former Newcastle United fan favourite Craig Bellamy was given a strong message to investor Amanda Staveley, saying that she would be buying a ‘brilliant’ club should she complete her takeover of the Tyneside outfit as expected.

Staveley and her firm PCP Capital Partners lodged an initial £300 million bid for the club in the last few days, however current owner Mike Ashley is thought to be holding out for a higher bid closer to his £350 million valuation.

While the first offer may not match Ashley’s price tag, Staveley is still expected to complete a takeover of the club before the New Year, with Ashley keen to sell up ahead of the January transfer window.

Craig Bellamy, who spent four seasons with the club between 2001 and 2005, says Staveley would be making a sound investment.

“Look Mike Ashley IS going to sell the club,” Bellamy told Sky Sports Monday Night Football (via HITC).

“I just look at it from the outside looking in and if there is money available and there is someone out there that’s wanting to buy a football club, please go and buy Newcastle United because it’s a brilliant football club, the fans.

“It just needs that lift.

“And if they can get that, and someone who is willing to invest in the squad, back the manager they’ll have a good time doing it as well.”
