Newcastle United started well in their return to the Premier League but have struggled in recent weeks, winning just one of their last six.

Three consecutive defeats have seen the Magpies tumble down the standings and have raised relegation fears, with Rafael Benitez’s side sitting just five points above the relegation zone.

With testing games against Watford and Chelsea on the horizon, the importance of the next few months isn’t lost on supporters and the January transfer window will be crucial, as the Magpies look to find stability in their squad.

However, the board has been reluctant to splash out in recent windows and although that may improve under new leadership, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has fired a huge warning to the Magpies if they want to keep Rafael Benitez.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said:

“When Rafa Benitez eventually leaves Newcastle it could be a long time before they get a manager or if they ever get a manager with that sort of CV. You think if you want investment and you want to push on, now is the time.”

“He probably doesn’t have the players to compete at that level or even top six. Manchester United beat Newcastle 4-1. Losing 4-1 to Mourinho: he won’t be happy with that. If Rafa Benitez got an offer from a team at that level or chasing the Champions League, is he going to stay at Newcastle in that situation?”

“He’s not going to want to go into games against some of these managerial rivals with one hand tied behind his back trying to win.”

With talks of a takeover ongoing, Newcastle fans will dream of more comfortable times ahead but things remain in the balance as Mike Ashley aims to complete a sale before Christmas.
