Newcastle club legend Alan Shearer has urged Rafael Benitez to move for former Liverpool striker Fernando Torres this January, saying he believes the Spaniard would be a ‘good signing’ for the club.

Torres has found himself surplus to requirements at his current club Atletico Madrid, with Antoine Griezmann, Kevin Gameiro and Angel Correa all pipping him in the striking pecking order, leading to rumours of a potential departure from Spain after the New Year.

Amongst the most interesting rumours is talk of a re-union with is former manager Rafael Benitez at St James Park, and while such talk is yet to be verified, Shearer believes it would be a move to suit both club and player.

“Yes, I think he would,” Shearer said, when asked if he thinks Torres would improve Newcastle. “I think that’s one of the areas where are Newcastle are struggling at this moment of time – scoring goals.

“We do need additions to give us something different, someone with a bit of presence who can sniff out a goal. If you’ve got a guy who can get you 10-15 league goals a season, that can make the difference.

“So yeah, I think he would be a good addition. If he is available, he’d do a decent job at Newcastle.”
