Former Spurs midfielder Lewis Holtby is unlikely to move to St James Park this January despite rumours he is set for a return to England, reports Sport 24.

The ex-Tottenham and Fulham midfielder is currently plying his trade in the Bundesliga with Hamburg, however has struggled for first team action this term, leading to speculation he was to leave the club after the New Year.

Newcastle have long been interested in the midfielder, and were on high alert after rumours circulated he was unhappy in Germany.

However, the player’s agent, Marcus Noack, has now all but ruled out a switch to Tyneside for the 27-year-old.

“I am assuming that Lewis will fulfil his contract with Hamburg and there are no signs from the club that he should leave earlier,” Noack told Daily Blid.

“And I am sure that the club will need him over the course of the season to bring his qualities to bear.”
