Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez has admitted his side’s Championship mentality has cost them as many as 8 points already this season.

The Magpies lost out to Bournemouth at the weekend thanks to a last gasp Steve Cook winner at St James’ Park, and again to Burnley a week previous where Jeff Hendrick struck the only goal of the game with fifteen minutes to go.

After losing back-to-back games, Benitez has insisted his side must not make mistakes as they did last year in the Championship, and must concentrate for the full 90 minutes if they are to make this campaign a success.

“We have to learn quickly what it means to be in the Premier League and what it means to make mistakes. It is not like in the Championship when you make mistakes and you can still win.” Benitez said via The Mag.

“If you make a mistake, then you pay for that. We have to learn what we have and what we have to do, how to react if something is right, or if something is wrong.

“It seemed that we were learning quickly but now we are making mistakes and paying for it.

“We have to be sure we are more focused and concentrate, especially in the last minutes of a game.”

Newcastle currently sit in 11th place in the Premier League having picked up 14 points so far this season.
