Newcastle may look to sign Everton midfielder Ross Barkley in January if a takeover has been completed by then, according to the Daily Star.

Local newspaper the Chronicle has revealed that Magpies boss Rafa Benitez is looking for three signings; a striker, a left back and a number ten, and the Spaniard has confirmed that his scouts have been instructed to look for players in case more money is made available after a takeover.

Whether, as the Daily Star claims, Magpies representatives have discussed potential transfer targets with the club’s prospective new owners PCP partners, it is highly unlikely, but it it not beyond the realms of possibility that Benitez is planning a swoop for Barkley.

The 23 year old is out of contract in the summer, and will be available for a knockdown price. Whether the England international could be persuaded to make the switch to St James’ Park is another matter entirely though. Tottenham are long term admirers of the playmaker while Chelsea reportedly remain in the hunt for the player despite Barkley turning down a deadline day move to the Blues back in August.
