Newcastle United fans have been left angered after Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks was called up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad ahead of Jonjo Shelvey.
Neither of the duo were included in Southgate’s provisional squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers, however after Manchester City midfielder Fabian Delph – who was re-called for the first time in nearly 18 months – dropped out with injury, the ex-Middlesbrough manager turned to Tottenham’s Winks as his replacement.
Winks had only just returned from injury upon his call-up.
Following Newcastle’s impressive start to the season, and indeed Shelvey’s, the former Swansea midfielder had himself been touted to take Delph’s spot in the Three Lions squad by a number of pundits including former Newcastle boss Graeme Souness, however he found himself playing second fiddle to Winks who instead was given his first ever call up.
Shelvey put in a marvellous performance against his old side Liverpool during the Magpies 1-1 draw with the Reds on Sunday, and following his display, the Toon army are struggling to understand Southgate’s decision to exclude their star midfielder …
