Rafael Benitez has identified the position in which he plans to invest this January.

With the Magpies first choice left-back Paul Dummett still sidelined through injury, Benitez has revealed he will be looking to strengthen in that area come the New Year.

Summer signing Javier Manquillo has been the main man for Newcastle this season in Dummett’s absence, and while his performances have been solid for the most part, the Spaniard still feels he needs to add strength in depth at full-back.

“At least we have to wait maybe one month, and maybe more because it’s part of the process.” Benitez said speaking on Dummett’s expected return date.

“He will be back with us in time, we already working hard to try and reduce the time, but it is clear that we have to respect that timeframe.

“If we can bring someone to compete with him [in January], it will be fine but at the moment I’m happy with the job the others are doing.”

Newcastle had been previously linked with St Etienne defender Kevin Malcuit during the summer, however missed out with the full-back instead joining Lille, meaning the Magpies will have to turn their attention elsewhere.
