Newcastle United have found stability in the opening weeks of the Premier League season but there’s still a lot of work to do, especially over the course of the coming weeks as the Magpies face three crucial matches.

A decisive run for Rafael Benitez’ side begins this weekend with the hosting of Crystal Palace, a side rock-bottom of the Premier League table but who will have had their morale boosted by a shock victory over defending champions Chelsea.

With Roy Hodgson’s side now on a high, and dreaming about turning their season around after their campaign started with seven consecutive defeats without a single goal scored by the Eagles, it could be a very difficult game for Newcastle.

Sky SportsĀ pundit Paul Merson is predicting exactly that this weekend, as he expects the Magpies to be held to a 1-1 draw by a revitalised Crystal Palace outfit.

“What a result for Palace against Chelsea, and it just shows you how important and good Wilfried Zaha is, how big a player he is in that side.”

“This is another big, big game, and I can’t really separate them. You like to think Palace have turned the corner, but if they lose this they are virtually back to where they were the week before the Chelsea game, because they would have highlighted this game as a potential three points. If they can get a draw, it’s been a great couple weekends for Palace.”

A draw would be frustrating for Newcastle, who will be eyeing all three points, but it would push the Magpies further towards Premier League safety.
