Newcastle’s three-match unbeaten run came to an end last night as the Magpies lost 1-0 away from home against fellow high-fliers Burnley, which saw Rafael Benitez’s men miss out on the chance to rise to sixth in the standings.

Whilst Newcastle’s form looks decent on paper, scoring three goals in four games will certainly be a concern for Benitez and the Magpies have just one win during that period, a narrow 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace last weekend.

It’s clear that there is plenty of work for Newcastle to do if they’re to find stability in the Premier League and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher issued a one-word damning assessment of the squad, stating that they lack quality.

Speaking on Monday Night Football, the former Liverpool defender said:

“I mean, let’s not forget, the last game they played they scored in the last minute – that could have gone either way. When you win a game 1-0, you can say ‘great defensive performance’, but that can easily be turned into a negative. Newcastle never looked like scoring a goal.”

The Magpies will certainly look for improvements this weekend when they face Bournemouth, a match that’s followed by a stern test against Manchester United after the international break.
