Mikel Merino has revealed he felt ‘comfortable’ playing alongside Jonjo Shelvey in midfield and hopes that the new found partnership will be allowed to prosper in the coming weeks.

The duo played alongside each other in the Magpies midfield during the 1-1 draw against Liverpool at St James’ Park, with both being instrumental in helping their side pick up a well deserved point against Jurgen Klopp’s men.

Shelvey had spent the last three games suspended, however Merino was pleased to have him back alongside him following his return as they started their first game together.

“I was comfortable with him, it worked well,” Merino said in the Chronicle: “He wants to play the ball, he wants to help his team-mates whenever everyone is looking for a solution and the important thing is that we have won one incredible point.

“It doesn’t matter who plays, I have been saying this all season, whoever plays will do a great job.

“Liverpool were not an easy team to play against for the midfielders because of the way they play and press, but I think we did well.

“We can play much better though against other teams.”
