Newcastle United’s Ayoze Perez has revealed he is targeting a place in Julen Lopetegui’s Spain squad for the World Cup in Russia next summer, but knows he will have to be at his best to earn a spot.

Spain secured their World Cup spot with victories over Albania and Israel last week.

Perez, a native of Tenerife, hopes his strong start to the season in which he has started at seven Premier League games for Rafael Benitez’s side will stand him in good stead for an international call-up.

“My dream is for me to be able to play for the national team,” Perez told Sky Sports.

“I had the chance to play for the u21s but with the first team, that would be something really amazing.”

Despite his dreams of competing for La Roja however, the striker insists he remains focused on life in the Premier League and is looking forward to getting back to action after the international break.

“I’m not thinking about that, though. I’m trying my best, I want to score goals, and hopefully I can make that dream true.”
