Newcastle United are preparing a bid for Benfica defender Lisandro Lopez ahead of the January transfer window, reports TalkSPORT.

The Magpies have had a solid start to the Premier League season, with their most recent win over Crystal Palace at the weekend lifting them to an impressive sixth place.

However, despite their good start, manager Rafael Benitez is understood to still want to bring in reinforcements after the new year after a quiet summer, and could begin with Benfica’s Lopez as he looks to bolster his options in defence.

The Argentine, who despite winning three consecutive Primera Division titles with Benfica, has struggled for playing time at the Stadium of Light since his 2013 move from Arsenal de Sarandi, making just 28 appearances in four seasons.

He has also been capped four times by Argentina, but has failed to appear for his country since 2012.

Newcastle could offer the out-of-favour defender a route out of Portugal as soon as January.
