Newcastle United are eyeing up Czech defender Jakub Jugas and are ready to place a £2 million bid for the 25-year-old in January, report the Chronicle.

Jugas, currently of Slavia Prague, moved to the Czech club only this summer in a deal worth just over £500,000, however his impressive performances for his new club have seen his value increase and turned heads from a number of clubs in Europe.

Newcastle are reported to have been to watch the defender on three separate occasions this season and have been impressed with his performances.

Manager Rafael Benitez has been vocal with his need to add strength in depth to his side this January after a relatively quiet summer transfer wise.

While the Magpies currently have in-form Jamaal Lascelles and Ciaran Clark manning their central defence, injuries to Florian Lejeune and Chancel Mbemba however have left Benitez’s side short in numbers at the back.

Newcastle are expected to face competition from both Serie A and Bundesliga sides for his services.
