Newcastle United are eyeing up Japan star Yuto Nagamoto as they look to bring in defensive reinforcements this January, but will face competition from both Burnley and West Brom, reports TalkSPORT.

Now 31, Nagamoto has been with his current club Inter Milan since 2011, and has made exactly 200 appearances for the Serie A giants in what has been a successful time in Italy for the Japan international.

Inter remain keen on keeping hold of the dynamic full-back and have offered him a new contract, however Nagamoto is yet to accept and is thought to be taking his time over deciding his future.

Nagamoto’s current contract with Inter expires in June 2019.

While he mulls over his future at the San Siro, a number of Premier League clubs including Newcastle have been monitoring the situation.

Magpies boss Rafael Benitez has been vocal in his need to strengthen in the full-back position this January, and believes Nagamoto could be the man to fit the bill.

The 31-year-old has been part of Japan’s squad that recently qualified for the FIFA World Cup next summer in Russia as winners of Group B in AFC qualification.
