The French shot stopper had been eyed by Rafael Benitez during the summer as the Spaniard looked to bolster his options between the sticks, but Areola has stated any rumours linking him with a move to Tyneside a ‘totally unfounded’.

“I am currently concerned by two very important matches with the French team,” Areola, who is on international duty with France, said via his official Twitter account.
“Rumours about my future are totally unfounded even if I understand that the media must tell or write some stories and that Paris Saint-Germain attract a lot of attention.
“I want to say that I am attached to the club which has the ambition to win everything, to the city of Paris, and that I concentrate on my season.”
Areola has become the club’s first choice keeper this season after leapfrogging Kevin Trapp, however with the keeper yet to sign a new deal with the club, he admits that he will at some point sit down to talk with his current club about his long term future in the French capital.
“All that is said about me is false! We will talk about my future in-house with the club.”
