Newcastle United fans have voted for Matt Richie as their Player of the Season so far in a poll set up by the Chronicle.

Richie beat both Mikel Merino, who was favourite to land the makeshift award, and club captain Jamaal Lascelles to claim the title, picking up an impressive 40% of the total votes.

Richie is yet to find the net this season, but has an impressive four assists to his name already and has proven to be one of Rafael Benitez’s most vital players in what has been a solid start to the new campaign for the Magpies.

Newcastle currently sit 9th in the table after seven games played, with a brilliant run of three consecutive wins in September saw them rocket up the table to as high as fourth.

The former Bournemouth star has continued the way he left off last season, where he scored 12 times and made 7 assists for his team-mates in his debut year with the Magpies in the Championship.
