Newcastle United are flying high in the Premier League this season but they find themselves at a crossroads, as they’re involved in takeover talks and could find themselves in completely different financial circumstances come January.
Many top sides have struggled to find their identity and perform following an influx of money, with memorable cases being Tottenham Hotspurs’ unsuccessful spending spree following the sale of Gareth Bale, West Ham’s move to the London Stadium and Everton’s busy summer in the most recent window.
Rafael Benitez needs to ensure that Newcastle don’t fall into the same trap in January and that means he must retain players who are well adversed to the proud history of the club and what fans want to see, which is why bringing former players back to the scene is a good move.
Whilst these men may not stand as the Tyneside heroes they once were, there is a chance for that to change and for them to enjoy a second coming at St. James’ Park.
