Tottenham Hotspur flop Vincent Janssen almost joined Newcastle United on deadline day before instead moving to Turkish side Fenerbahce on a season-long loan, reports The Mag.

The Dutch international was heavily linked to a number of Premier League clubs on deadline day after a difficult first season in London with Spurs, however turned down the chance to join the Magpies in order to revitalise his career abroad.

The Spurs forward is claimed to have rejected a loan move to Newcastle, after being supposedly offered the opportunity on deadline day.

Janssen had a tough first year with Spurs, finding the net just 6 times in 35 appearances for Mauricio Pochettino’s side, and only twice from open play following his £17 million move from AZ Alkmaar last summer.

Newcastle have been widely criticised for their lack of business in this summer’s transfer window, with Janssen one of a number of names that have emerged as missed targets.

Former star Andy Carroll and Leicester’s Islam Slimani are also thought to have been close to joining the club.
