Newcastle’s recent form has been down to a number of factors.

The experience of Rafael Benitez; Jamaal Lascelles new eye for goal; the crowd at St James’ Park.

However one component that has been without doubt one of their most important over the past year or so has been the youth in their squad – a side now officially labelled the youngest in the Premier League by the CIES Football Observatory in a recent study.

The average age of the squad – based on those most likely to be playing in the top flight this season – has an average age of just 25,57.

The findings come as little surprise given the backbone of Rafael Benitez’s side. Jamaal Lascelles, the club’s captain is only 23, as are Chancel Mbemba and Issac Hayden – both of whom are staples in the Spaniard’s side.

Mikel Merino, the Magpies Player of the Month, is only 21.

However, while Newcastle come in as the youngest in the Premier League, they rank a mere 113th across Europe.

Ukrainian side Stal Kaminske come in with the youngest at an astonishing 21.7 years, and Lille, the top ‘big side’ come in at number six on the list with 22.8.
