Newcastle owner Mike Ashley says he is committed to spending money on transfer this winter, with the club having a reported £60 million to spend on new players, reports the Chronicle.

Ashley’s company Mash Holdings – the company that controls the businessman’s holdings in Sports Direct and his other ventures – have left a statement in the accounts pledging £80m to transfers.

It remains unclear as to an exact amount, however given Newcastle’s net spend of only £20 million over the past years, it is estimated there is approximately £60 million left in transfer funds.

The annual statement reads: “Subsequent to the balance sheet date, the club has committed to a further net spend of approximately £80m on additions to the playing squad.”

Ashley was heavily criticised over the summer for failing to part ways with sufficient cash in order to improve Newcastle’s squad following their promotion to the Premier League, however such criticism has died out after the club’s impressive start to the season.

Rafael Benitez’s side currently sit 9th in the table having won three of their six top flight games so far.
