Rafael Benitez has admitted that his side still remain ‘short in some areas’ following the weekend’s loss to Brighton, but insists the club must focus on football going into the New Year.

The Magpies walked away from the Amex Stadium empty handed after their 1-0 defeat, however still remain ninth in the table following three consecutive wins prior to Sunday’s narrow loss.

Benitez was heavily criticised at the end of August for his lack of business in the summer window, however those critics have quietened after a solid start to the new campaign.

Despite their silence however, the Spaniard remains aware of his side’s shortcomings.

“I think we are more focused on football now.” said Benitez following the defeat. “That is the way when you have finished the transfer window and you can concentrate just on football. We are trying to do that.

“In these kind of games, we can see that we are still short in some areas, but when we do well as a team we can compete and beat anyone.

“These small margins are the key for us if we are going to get points in these kind of games.”

Newcastle are expected to have a busy January following a quiet summer, however Benitez still remains happy with his current squad and believes the Magpies were unlucky not to get anything from their trip down south.

“I think we deserved to pick up at least one point, but we didn’t do it.” he said.

“We didn’t manage the final 20 minutes in the way I was expecting, and that is something we have to improve.”
