Dwight Gayle was one of a number of high profile Newcastle players who were beaten by Wolves reserves last night whilst playing for Peter Beardsley’s U23’s.

Newcastle lost 1-0 on the night at St James’ Park thanks to a goal from old boy Scott Sellars on what was a disappointing night for a strong Magpies side.

Gayle was one of a number of former first team regulars named in the side, with Jack Colback – who is yet to feature at all this season for Benitez’s side – Henri Saivet, Rolando Aarons and Freddie Woodman, however Beardsley’s star studded side were unable to topple Wolves.

Gayle was recently dropped to the club’s reserve squad, only a year after finishing as the Magpies top scorer. The Englishman hit an impressive 23 goals for Rafael Benitez’s side as they won the EFL Championship to earn promotion straight back to the Premier League following their relegation in 2015/16.

However, after having struggled for game time in recent weeks and finding himself playing as third choice striker behind both Joselu and Alexander Mitrovic, the Englishman now finds out of Rafael Benitez’s immediate plans.
